Proofpoint Email Protection is widely used across organizations for its robust capabilities in email encryption, URL protection, and virus scanning. Users have praised the software for its granular control over inbound and outbound email, allowing for detailed overview and management. The software effectively filters all incoming and outgoing emails, surpassing the capabilities of previous mail filter solutions by significantly reducing malware, viruses, and spam. One notable feature that users appreciate is the impostor detection, which has proven to be highly effective in reducing attacks targeting executives for gift cards and other goods.

Proofpoint seamlessly integrates with Office 365, offering an added layer of protection by preventing phishing and spoofed emails from reaching users. It acts as a primary spam filter, providing daily digests of filtered mail to users. For clients who prefer not to operate a dedicated email gateway, Proofpoint serves as a shared service, delivering robust perimeter defense for all email traffic. The software's ability to block communication based on domain, content, and malicious sites or links has proven successful in stopping the spread of malicious phishing content. Overall, Proofpoint Email Protection serves as a dependable email gateway that protects both inbound and outbound email users from malicious threats while efficiently minimizing spam and junk emails.

Granular control of inbound and outbound email: Users have been impressed with the granular control offered by Proofpoint for managing both inbound and outbound email. Several reviewers have mentioned that they appreciate the ability to configure rules for mail, which allows them to tailor their email management according to their specific needs.

Extensive spam detection capabilities: Many users have praised Proofpoint's extensive spam detection capabilities. They have mentioned that the software is highly effective in detecting and stopping spam, with some stating that it can detect and stop around 99% of spam. This feature has been greatly appreciated by reviewers as it helps maintain a clean inbox.

End-user services and reduced administrative work: Reviewers have highlighted the end-user services provided by Proofpoint as a major advantage. They mention that these services greatly reduce administrative work as users are able to create their own filters and release their own mail. This self-service capability not only saves time but also empowers users to manage their emails effectively.

Confusing and Cumbersome User Interface: Users have found Proofpoint's user interface to be confusing and cumbersome, requiring extra steps and making it difficult to perform tasks quickly. Some users suggest that the UI should be improved for better understanding and easier access to all features. They find the GUI interface confusing and not easy to navigate, with abysmal default settings that make it challenging to effectively filter out unwanted messages. The layout of the email protection, TAP, and TRAP dashboards has been mentioned as inconvenient, prompting users to express a desire for a more modern-looking and streamlined user interface.

Difficulties in Validating DKIM Initiation: Some users have encountered difficulties when trying to validate DKIM initiation with Proofpoint. They find the configuration consoles and options provided by Proofpoint a bit complicated, leading to confusion. As a result, they express the need for more in-depth rule customization options beyond what is currently offered.

Troubleshooting and Support Issues: Users have expressed dissatisfaction with troubleshooting and support for Proofpoint, stating that it is not straightforward. Some users have experienced unresponsiveness from the support team, encountering long wait times for resolution without receiving acknowledgement when certain components or features do not function as expected. The cluttered support portal filled with outdated information makes it difficult for them to find documentation. To improve support and case resolution, users suggest having a TAM or CSM available. Additionally, some users feel that customer support can be too generic and unhelpful at times, recommending the addition of a chat-bot assistant for better understanding of software features and issue resolution.

We use Proofpoint in our Cyber Defense team not across all the organisation. As it is used to protect the unwanted traffic from being communicated to our organisation's users. We use Proofpoint to block communication based on the domain, the content of the mail, malicious site, or link present in the mail. For example if I learned that some malicious content (for example a malicious phishing site) in being spread using the mail in our organisation we reach out to Proofpoint to block the content of the mail being communicated to our users with the help of Proofpoint (in cases that it's the same in all the mail). We also use the domain being used to send the mail to our users (we used to attach a sample mail for better understanding of content). According to the priority of the case they take desired action. So ultimately it helps to stop any malicious phishing content from being spread across our organisation and protect all the users being targeted of such unwanted content from the web. Once a site is being blocked by Proofpoint it will not be accessible to the organisational user if if they clicked on it accidentally.
  • When a bulk of unwanted mail start triggering against your organisation and removing them from web in an instant node is not possible, Proofpoint help as an instant measure to stop such flow.
  • In case, when something malicious being spread in your organisation and you want user to remain uninfected even after clicking on the malicious link, Proofpoint proves as a major solution as it prevent blocked domains to be open by any user.
  • It also act as an AD-HOC measure when you have to know in advance about some threat and you have the IOC of the threat you can add that in advance in block lost in Proofpoint. That helps to prevent any future harm to the organisation.
  • UI can be improved for better and easy understanding of all features.
  • They should have a chat-bot type assistant for better understanding of all its features and easy understanding while raising or working on any issue by the user.
  • AI might help to improve threat hunting and make it more useful for a security organisation, Where using AI Proofpoint suggest a number of existing threat list to organisation. Help in pro-active steps to stop being targeted by any malicious content over the web.
A very useful and beneficial application for almost all of the organisation operating over the web as being on the web means being in danger to get phished or spoofed, to safeguard a large number of user base it is required to have Proofpoint so one can easily block a content that proves harmful for the whole organisation. Can be blocked using Proofpoint within minutes. A number of times we have scenarios where hackers are trying to get the user spoofed using false content and send a large number of emails to almost all users. If our organization at that time reached out to all the users to stop them from being targeted from the mail - it seemed impossible. So we use Proofpoint to get the malicious content inaccessible for anyone in the organisation.

We implemented the Proofpoint solution approximately 18 months ago. It has proved to be invaluable. We use it institution wide and have been very pleased. The imposter prevention module alone prevented a great number of potential threats. We spend much less time putting out fires because Proofpoint is working so well. We had an excellent implementation team who took the time needed to maximize deployment and ensure our understanding of the product. Support is prompt to respond when needed.
  • Deployment was excellent. With over 25 years experience of working with vendor assisted deployments, I will say this was definitely one of the smoothest I every experienced.
  • The imposter prevention module is an excellent tool that saves lots of time.
  • I love the smart search functionality.
  • TAP Dashboard is definitely a favorite feature.
  • I would like the smart search section to have a message preview area.

Proofpoint email protection is very well suited for our environment. They continue to build on the technology and its use has greatly reduced the time it takes to manage malicious mail, search for messages, and contain threats. The daily digest is also a great feature that allows end users to decide for themselves what messages they want or do not want to receive.

From a protection standpoint, I can't think of a scenario where Proofpoint is not appropriate.

Our organization uses it for all incoming emails to protect from numerous threats.
  • Limited false positives
  • Allows for a lot of customization of settings to meet our business needs
  • More automated reporting features for management would be useful.
It's a great enterprise suite of tools, but not for a small business.

Proofpoint is used by our organization for email spam/virus detection and email attachment sandboxing.
  • Great customer support
  • Great spam filtering and rule customization
  • The ability to create a list of attachments that are allowed instead of only a "block X attachments" list.
  • The ability to integrate false positive detection reporting directly into the GUI.
  • The ability to make more in-depth rule customization past its current offerings.
Proofpoint Email Protection is an amazing tool that I recommend to all businesses thanks to their great customer support and quality product.

We are using Proofpoint currently for email security (TAP) and this is for our global level implementation.
  • Very strong and good at identifying threats
  • Very good to block the unwanted and new phishing attacks along with Spam and Malware attacks
  • Very strong and cooperative support from Proofpoint
  • Very good experience with Proofpoint support - always very fast and immediate assistance
  • Maybe need to be stronger at capturing the URL and attachment defences before we report attacks.
  • I do agree no product will be able to block all sorts of new malware/phishing attacks, however Proofpoint could be more proactive rather than reactive.
  • Maybe more options for search queries and for easier administration. I am good with the config, consoles etc. But I could see people getting confused with the few options and consoles we have. They may feel like it is a bit complicated.
We have had many spoofing and malware attacks which have been proactively identified by Proofpoint and reported to us as well. And also the monthly newsletters are very useful. I am very happy with Proofpoint's tech support and the way we get support very quickly.

We use Proofpoint Email Protection to protect our emails from malicious content coming into the organization. We also use it for DLP on outgoing emails.
  • Good email protection and spam filtering
  • Easy search for identifying emails coming in
  • DLP protection has customization options to fit business needs
  • Until you get to know why sections and config options are in a certain area it seems random and confusing.
  • It would be better if it interacted with their other products more smoothly.
  • Customizing the spam filtering can take a little while to dial in.
Well suited:
Proofpoint does a pretty good job at protecting us from spam emails. I was able to block a lot of emails coming from SendGrid by blocking SendGrid emails with a custom spam filter. However, SendGrid has a lot of legit emails too so I was able to create another rule to allow those emails from certain people, then block the rest. That way business need was met but spam emails are blocked.

Less Appropriate
If you are trying to monitor internal to internal emails Proofpoint is probably a little over featured for that.

We use it across the whole organization nationwide.
  • Spam detection
  • Phishing prevention
  • Virus detection
  • Management interface
  • False positive reporting
  • System performance
It's a very good filtering solution but not without its problems and issues, especially their so-called cloud implementation which is nothing more than an appliance with storage and performance limitations.

The configuration is very detailed, but at the same time it's not very intuitive and some things are very hard to set up.

Currently, we use Proofpoint to scan emails for our faculty and staff only. It addresses many issues that we have experienced in the past, such as impostor detection and phishing type emails.
  • The product has been stable since we deployed it. It updates regularly with minimal downtime.
  • It provides a easily to navigate interface for for users in regards to viewing/releasing their quarantined items
  • Proofpoint's spam detection is second to none. It is a little aggressive at times, but false positives are often remedied.
  • The support team is great and responds quickly to any issue that arises.
  • I scan the quarantine folders everyday for false positively caught email. I report the FPs that I find to Proofpoint support (everyday), but unfortunately there are always items to release.
  • I wish that there was a method to run a health check on the server without the need for support to login
Proofpoint Email Protection is well suited for a medium on-premises email deployment. I do not have any experience with the cloud-based offering.

It is being used throughout the organization. We use various features like TAP, TRAP. It is efficient and the global updates help in minimizing threats.

Sometimes it behaves weirdly in reporting FP due to which quarantined legitimate emails. We are planning to use PP to directly connect applications to send emails to clients especially for marketing purposes.

  • TAP
  • TRAP
  • Cloud Updates from various clients of Proofpoint.
  • Policy routes don't work correctly at times.
  • False Positive is a pain at times, essential business emails are quarantined.
  • DNS routing can be an issue at times.

If you want a global threat to be identified before entering your organization, you have this information readily available pre & post-delivery of emails to the vulnerable clients. It also allows you to restrict emails to be delivered to vulnerable users and delete emails from the affected users.

False Positive is good at times as it quarantines affected emails

Transport rule, suspicious sender, etc are some features which help differentiate between legit senders.

Scheduled reports to identify potential issues and analyze the daily/weekly/monthly traffic.

We are using Proofpoint Email Protection across our whole organization to filter out spam, bulk, viruses and unwanted email from ever getting to our end-users. We are using it for inbound and outbound mail flow.

  • Proofpoint uses a multi-layered approach in terms of scanning emails. Each and every message has to pass through different layers like Proofpoint Dynamic Reputation, virus protection, spam protection, targeted attack protection(URL defense and attachment defense) to be judged as bad email or clean email.
  • Proofpoint is very effective in blocking spam emails and reducing false positives with its MLX and SCSC technology.
  • Proofpoint's approach is different from the traditional email security tool in blocking the imposter emails. We have observed that 80% of the imposter emails are blocked by Proofpoint even though it can evade easily any filtering solution because imposter emails don't have any malicious attributes.
  • I have used almost all features in Proofpoint such as TLS, secure messaging, DLP, dictionaries, custom firewall rules, end-user digest, etc. It helps a lot to protect our environment from a cyber attack.
  • I feel Proofpoint has to improve the logs and reporting feature as it is not accurate some times.
  • Firewall rule can not be created in the middle of an order as per our choice, it has to be manually moved up or down.
  • It would be better if Proofpoint could block the message that matches the imposter display name that we add under imposter display name option. But Proofpoint doesn't block those messages, it just increases or decreases the imposter score.
Proofpoint is aggressive in blocking malicious attachments. The cloud sandboxing is very effective and blocks 99% of the attachment threat. Proofpoint's URL rewrite option hugely reduces the chance of allowing end-users to access a phishing site.

Proofpoint Email Protection is used across the entire organization. Since phishing attacks are the largest threat vector, the Proofpoint cloud solution provides a rock-solid level of protection for our end users that utilize email on a daily basis. The solution not only protects our users from malicious activity but also the loss of productivity by weeding out spam and other useless emails.
  • Effectively discards spam definite emails.
  • Protects users from malicious activity.
  • Performance of inspection is very efficient.
  • Operational availability is very high.
  • Features such as TAP and others are separate packages from a price point (not bundled).
  • Email quarantines are not always 100% accurate.
  • Some occasional false positives with email delivery.
Proofpoint Email Protection is a mission-critical security solution for any large enterprise. Email is usually the blood life of the company and its operations. With that, users are targeted via email for harvesting credentials and phishing attacks. The effectiveness and operational state of this security solution are what makes Proofpoint excel compared to its competitors. Proofpoint is always trying to stay one step ahead of the bad actors.

We use Proofpoint for a coorporate-wide email gateway both internal and external. Serves as a phishing, email, malware, sandboxing filter.
  • Email filtering rules - Easily write rules to deter and direct emails.
  • Quarantine - Great ability to quarantine with different formulas as well as a nice interface for end-user maintenance of queues.
  • Virus and malware filtering.
  • Could make the GUI interface easier to traverse.
Proofpoint Email Protection fits really well as an overall email gateway. I think the ability to get very granular with the rules and filtering makes it a great front end to email.

We use Proofpoint Email Protection to relay both inbound and outbound email with email filtering, malware, and spam protection. This also adds visibility to the email traffic for the entire company.
  • Anti-spam filtering
  • Malware protection
  • Imposter rejection
  • Email firewall rules could be more straightforward.
  • The admin interface could use more polishing.
If a company uses a self-hosted email solution i.e. Exchange server on-premises, then making Proofpoint your MX is a perfect example of how one could benefit from using this technology. More self-contained or competing solutions like Microsoft online email solutions with their own email protection would be a stretch to implement. Well, maybe for inbound traffic, and even that would be redundant.

We are using one cloud Proofpoint Email Protection instance for the whole group of about 6 companies. We wanted a better product for email protection, as our previous product was very limited in customization and we felt the protection could be better. Though Proofpoint Email Protection is not cheap, it does the job so much better. Though the basic core functionality is just to block malicious/unwanted email, the risk of having such email being delivered warrants investing in a good product.
  • Email filtering: it does the core functionality really well.
  • Reporting: the standard reports are numerous and are a big help for both administrators and management. I have not found a need for a custom report not on the default list yet.
  • Manageability & easy web administration. Use of user digests so people can manage their own spamfolder and report false positives is efficient
  • Customization via custom rules can be as specific as you want.
  • FN/FP reporting is a bit of a hassle.
  • Though training options are good, you should actually follow some training to get the extra benefits of the product to manage it better.
  • The admin GUI is not modern looking. Though a minor issue, it could help in administration.
Using it for email filtering is a very appropriate scenario. You don't want any email threat (virus/phishing) or distraction (spam) to get to the user inbox. Proofpoint Email Protection does this very well (not perfectly, but that would be very hard).

Our Proofpoint Email Protection is being used agency-wide. It does a great job at categorizing and quarantining SPAM and malicious emails. The easy to use interface allows our Service Desk folks to manage most end-user requests while the rock-solid operations of the appliance allows administrators to 'set and forget' it. We also use it as an SMTP relay for our computer systems to send email through. Our occasional use of their technical support has been exceptional. Usually, it's not to fix an issue but a 'how do you configure it to do this?' They are very helpful and timely. I recommend Proofpoint as a company as well as the Email Protection appliance.
  • Our experience with ProofPoint has been great. They achieve that fine line between false positives and false negatives.
  • The Smart Search feature turns cryptic logs into an easy to search interface that our Service Desk uses to troubleshoot email delivery issues (ie is the issue before the ProofPoint appliance or after with the Exchange environment).
  • It gives us the flexibility to allow a subset of users to receive .zip files while others are quarantined but releasable.
  • I haven't run across any areas that need improving.
The Proofpoint Email Protection appliance is well suited for the front door to your email system. It will protect you from the wild wild web while also protecting you when your user's accounts get compromised and send out SPAM or malicious emails. I don't know how many times it has kept us off the Black Lists.

We use Proofpoint Email Protection to protect our own Mailtraffic, but as an MSSP (Managed Security Service Provider), our main goal is to resell it to our customers as a managed Service. We run a lot of PPS Gateways in our Datacenters. Proofpoint Email Protection aims to be a carefree solution for every administrator, as far as it's possible. I don't want to sell (you) anything. I am a technician, not a sales guy. Therefore, I'm going to write this review from a technical Point-of-View.
  • Best Spam protection (honestly!).
  • Extremely flexible.
  • Fast support from the vendor.
  • Expensive (but justified).
  • Needs a lot of hardware resources in big environments (RAM hungry).
  • Using old Linux kernel 2.6.32 (CentOS 6.5, still supported though).
Proofpoint is always suited. If you are able to afford it, you should do it. Proofpoint Email Security is extremely flexible, so you can cover almost any scenario and create rules for every need. There are so many criteria/conditions which can be used to build custom rules. In all the years I have used Proofpoint Email Protection Server, I've rarely reached it's limits. And in that case, you can make a Request for Enhancement. Most attacks are done via Email. Everyone should aim to have maximum security. Proofpoint has a lot of techniques to achieve that, even if you don't use SPF/DKIM/DMARC. You can also use PPS to secure your Office 365, by the way.

Our Proofpoint deployment is being used as a relay and DLP solution for external communications with our customers.
  • Provides firewall rules which can be leveraged to permit disallow or rewrite headers based on the intended recipient.
  • Leverage firewall rules to route mail through DLP for PII or sensitive information.
  • Secure endpoint for email generation/decryption and storage.
  • DLP rules can be a bit cumbersome to use beyond the default modules.
  • DKIM initiation can be difficult to validate.
  • Support is not straightforward for troubleshooting.
Well suited for secure mail. Only registered or authenticated users can open or view decrypted email. Don't use it for email storage.

Proofpoint Email Protection is being used by across our whole organization. It is currently used to handle all of our inbound spam, malware and threat detection. The nature of our business relies on supporting corporations, so Proofpoint Email Protection allows us to securely communicate with our customers while minimizing our risk to bad actors.
  • Proofpoint Email Protection allows granular control of inbound and outbound spam and email firewall rules, providing the opportunity to narrow in on a specific threat while not introducing false positives.
  • Proofpoint Email Protection does an excellent job of managing DKIM and DMARC for our corporation.
  • Proofpoint Email Protection's email digest allows flexibility for our end users to manage their own spam inbox, minimizing the need for IT overhead.
  • Proofpoint Email Protection's admin console could benefit from a UI update. There are several modules and many settings within each module, so its easy to get lost.
  • Proofpoint Email Protection's remote syslog configuration should be made easier to setup and manage.
  • Proofpoint Email Protection's import and export of settings could be more flexible.
The product was fairly easy to install. The ProofPoint Professional Services proved to be very knowledgeable and walked us through the entire deployment. They worked with us to provide a process for migrating users for testing, and then slowly migrating the bulk of the user community while keeping the existing system running. The product has greatly outperformed our previous product with our user community also seeing a better, much more consistent outcome with spam filtering.

My only criticism is the user interface.

Our Proofpoint Email Protection service was implemented on-premises and utilized for the entire organization and protects roughly 18,000 active mailboxes. Given that e-mail based threats are some of the most successful attack vectors it was critical for our organization to have a solid protection system in place. We utilize the services for anti-spam, anti-virus, internal e-mail policy enforcement, advanced threat protection along with it's reporting and smart search capabilities.
  • The services provide a very high accuracy level related to anti-spam/virus detection with very few false positives. The services are also routinely evolving to address the latest attack profiles while at the same minimizing any type of disruptions to normal business e-mail traffic. To date the service have been an extremely stable platform with very few problems. Proofpoint mentions that most if not all of their support techs have a minimum of a Master's degree. Having worked with their support over the years, I can readily say that their support is top notch compared to their competitors.
  • Proofpoint's Email Protection is implemented in a modular format where protection components can be added as needed and managed within a single framework. This has minimized the footprint for these services in our datacenter.
  • The Email Protection services have a Smart Search capability that basically aggregates all of the log data and is extremely useful in getting quick answers to any type of questions related to message delivery.
  • The services are also extremely flexible in terms of mapping one's policies into the set of services. The screens are intuitive to use and have enough aids to be readily understood without having to routinely consult reference manuals.
  • The only real stumbling block we used run into was with application updates which in recent years has been automated to the point where it can literally be as simple as clicking on a button to initiate. It can perform updates with loss of service and if it runs into problems it can readily revert itself back to the prior release. Very well engineered update process.
  • My only real complaint if any would be the pricing of the services, yet having said that Proofpoint has been pretty flexible in negotiating a price that we can actually afford.
The Email Protection services are deployed in our environment as the first layer of defense for inbound internet traffic. As such they have held up extremely well under load with very few if any issues. We utilize the services for screening and protecting internal e-mail which is routed from our Office 365 deployment through the Email Protection services.

We are using Proofpoint Email Protection for all users in our company. We host our Exchange services and use Proofpoint Email Protection as our primary spam filter. All users have their mail filtered by our Proofpoint system, and each user has their mail which meets the "bulk" signatures filtered out, and given back to them each day in the form of a morning digest. Proofpoint does an excellent job of filtering mail and giving insight and granularity into the IT team for making changes and releasing email.
  • Powerful , Intelligence-based Smart filtering system, which categorizes and filters out malicious email in real time.
  • Incredible Granularity in filtering rules, custom email policies, and user management
  • Useful Proof of Concept period for initial deployment, as well as the ability to set any new custom policies to audit mode to test for extended periods of time what impact they will have.
  • The new Technical support portal is frustrating to use. You must login and fill out web forms to create a case before you call their technical support line, or they will refuse to assist until you log into the portal and create the case manually.
  • Support can take some time to respond to cases unless they are contacted regularly
Proofpoint Enterprise Email Protection seems like a great fit for any medium to large size corporations. The powerful tools and functionality of the software scales seemlessly with the size of the user base, and can support large user bases and changing company sizes without issue.

For small companies, although Proofpoint would work great; tt's an expensive, powerful tool which may not be within an IT budget.
